We are planning a small volunteer project in the city, which will require contacting a large number of people by phone to recruit volunteers and participants. I'm a little worried that we simply won't be able to handle all the calls manually.

That's totally understandable — when there are a lot of people, manual dialing takes a lot of time and resources. I recently prepared a small campaign for a charity initiative and decided to use modern call automation services. For example, a useful article for understanding such tools is the material on the MightyCall website: Auto Dialer vs Predictive Dialer at source. It explains well the difference between an auto dialer and a predictive dialer, how they work, and what tasks they are suitable for.
